Classes
Astronomy
Astrology involves observation of the night skies with telescopes, as well as gaining an understanding of the various phenomena that go on in space, such as Lunar phases and space 'weather.' Assignments include learning the names of stars, constellations and planets, as well as charting their locations, movements, and environments.
Charms
Charms comprises a very wide range of different spells concerned with giving a target (be it an object or an individual) new and unexpected properties and/or making the target perform certain actions, among other possible effects. Charms can be some of the most powerful and game-changing spells in existence. Successfully casting a charm requires concentration, precise wand movements, and proper pronunciation of the spell's incantation. Charms classes are described as notoriously noisy and chaotic, as the lessons are largely practical.
Defence Against the Dark Arts
Defence Against the Dark Arts, commonly shortened to D.A.D.A., is the class that teaches students how to protect themselves against the Dark Arts, how to use offensive and protective spells, and how to properly handle and deal with dark creatures.
Herbology
Herbology is the study of magical plants and fungi. Students learn how to properly care for and utilise different plants, as well as about their magical properties and what they are used for. Students are also taught a few spells that are helpful for gardening, such as the Herbivicus Charm.
History of Magic
History of Magic is the study of the history of the wizarding world. The lessons in this class are only lectures about significant names, dates and events in wizarding history. Topics include the Goblin Rebellions, the Witch-hunts, the Giant wars and the origin of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy.
Potions
Potions is the exact art and subtle science of creating various liquid mixtures with different magical effects, many of which can not be achieved through spells. It requires adding the correct ingredients into the cauldron and stirring the brew in the correct way, both of which has to be done at the right times and at the right temperatures. Students also study the different ingredients used in potion making and their properties.
Transfiguration
Transfiguration is a very difficult theory-based subject that practises the art of changing the form or appearance of an object, as well as changing it back. It is also possible to change inanimate objects into living creatures and vice versa, as is changing a living creature into another species. Conjuring things out of thin air, making things vanish into thin air, and making things switch places are also elements of transfiguration. Human Transfiguration is considered the most difficult branch of this subject. Transfiguration has been described as "some of the most dangerous magic you will be taught."
Arithmancy
Arithmancy is the magical study of numbers and their mystical properties. The subject requires strong skills in mathematics, logical thinking, and pattern recognition. Students learn to predict events, analyze magical properties, and understand deeper truths about the universe through complex numerical calculations. Arithmancy is considered one of the more challenging academic subjects, but also one of the most respected for its precision and depth.
Care of Magical Creatures
Care of Magical Creatures focuses on the study, handling, and care of magical beasts and beings. Students learn how to properly interact with creatures ranging from harmless Puffskeins to dangerous Hippogriffs, Thestrals, and Blast-Ended Skrewts. The class combines practical, hands-on lessons with theoretical study of magical biology and magical creature laws. Safety, respect, and empathy are emphasized when working with creatures both big and small.
Divination
Divination is a mystical and often elusive subject, where students explore the art of predicting the future. The class is known for its eccentric and vague methods, such as reading tea leaves, interpreting crystal balls, and studying the movements of planets and stars.
Study of Ancient Runes
The Study of Ancient Runes is the examination of magical scripts and symbols from ancient languages. Students learn to translate, interpret, and apply runes in magical contexts, from enchanting objects to understanding ancient magical texts. The course emphasizes historical knowledge, linguistic skill, and an appreciation for the cultural origins of magical writing. Mastery of runes is essential for any witch or wizard pursuing careers in magical research, spellcrafting, or archaeology.
